Chickenpox and Shingles Vaccination Service in Islington

The NHS provides free vaccinations to those who are vulnerable to chickenpox, but if you are not eligible for a free vaccination, Egerton Pharmacy in Islington can provide a private chickenpox vaccination service. We can also provide vaccination against shingles, which can be painful and uncomfortable when it occurs.

Vaccination services that are easy and help keep you protected from chickenpox and shingles

Shingles and chickenpox are caused by the same virus (Varicella Zoster). While we associate chickenpox with childhood, shingles is often a result of the virus reactivating within the body. It can happen at any age but is more common in the older generation. Symptoms are often painful and uncomfortable for the person affected.

You can protect yourself against either condition by getting a simple vaccination from Egerton Pharmacy in Islington. This is a private service - if you are over the age of 70 the NHS provide shingles vaccinations as a free service, and all people considered vulnerable to chickenpox are eligible for free vaccinations. Please contact your GP.

What is chickenpox, and who could be at risk?

Chickenpox is the common name given to the viral infection also known as Varicella Zoster. It is a highly contagious infection that is usually spread through direct contact, coughing and sneezing.

People of all ages can be affected by chicken pox, although it is most common in childhood. Symptoms range from person to person but they include itchy spots, blisters, high temperatures and loss of appetite. The symptoms of chickenpox do tend to get worse with age.

A chickenpox vaccine is recommended to anyone working within a healthcare setting, anyone who may be in contact with the virus through laboratory work and anyone who comes into close contact with someone with a weakened immune system. It is recommended that anyone living in the same household as someone receiving chemotherapy has the chickenpox vaccination.

Trust us for your private, hassle-free chickenpox vaccine

Don't let chickenpox get the better of you or your loved ones. Here at Egerton Pharmacy we can vaccinate against the varicella zoster virus which causes chickenpox. Chickenpox is a common, usually mild, virus spread easily when in close contact with someone with the infection. Although extremely common with children, anyone can be at risk so it's best to be covered.

The vaccination is administered in two doses, 4-8 weeks apart depending on the brand used. There are currently 2 chickenpox vaccine brands available, VARIVAX and VARILRIX. Only £70 per dose.

The chickenpox vaccine is not part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule but is suitable from the age of 9 months.

What are the symptoms of shingles and who can it affect?

Shingles is a painful condition that involves a painful, itchy rash on one side of the body. It affects the surface of the skin and can even spread to the eyes. Not everyone affected by shingles needs medication, but often the symptoms are reduced with the help of creams and ointments.

It begins with a burning sensation in the skin, followed by a rash of very painful fluid-filled blisters that can then burst and turn into sores before healing. Often an area on just one side of the body is affected, usually the chest but sometimes the head, face and eye.

About 1 in 4 people have Shingles at some time in their lives. It can occur at any age, but it is most common in older adults (over the age of 50 years). After the age of 50, it becomes increasingly more common as you get older. It is uncommon to have shingles more than once, but some people do have it more than once.

Suffering from shingles can prevent you from being in contact with loved ones, going on holiday and visiting friends, as it is a highly contagious virus and nerve damage can be one of the lasting effects of Shingles.

Help prevent the spread of shingles and the chance of catching and reactivating the virus by opting for a private shingles vaccination at Egerton Pharmacy.
